What is a phalange?

A phalange is a bone in the fingers or toes. There are three phalanges in each finger and two in each thumb, for a total of 14 phalanges in each hand. In the toes, there are two phalanges in the big toe and three in the other toes, for a total of 14 phalanges in each foot. The phalanges are categorized into three types: proximal, middle, and distal phalanges. They are important for providing structure and support to the fingers and toes, as well as contributing to the range of motion of these digits.
